EXHIBITIONS

KARUIZAWA DREAMSCAPE
Photographs by Tom Haar

Untitled (KD-1), 2011.
January 20 - February 14, 2012
Gallery 'Iolani, Kane'ohe, Hawaii
Windward Community College
45-720 Kea'ahala Road
Kane'ohe, Hawaii 96744

An impressionistic view of the Karuizawa environs, with dream-like images tying vague early recollections with recent imagery.

This exhibition is based on photography and research done in the summer of 2008, when I spent three months in Karuizawa on a Fulbright Grant. The impetus to work on this project stems from the fact that our family was ordered to evacuate to Karuizawa for a three-year period during World War II and afterward (1943-46). As I was still very small during this time, I only have slight recollections of these years, which were very difficult for my parents, who had arrived in Japan only three years earlier. This project, then, became a way for me to "rediscover" Karuizawa through photography, a craft which I learned from my father, Francis Haar.

[Photographer Tom Haar was present at the opening of Japan Society's building in 1971 and documented many important events at the Society during the early to mid 1970s.]
