The Japan Society’s popular intensive Japanese conversation courses will be held at the Toyota Language Center from April 26 to May 25. These courses are designed to supplement the Toyota Language Center’s regular course offerings. The curriculum is conversation-intensive, with the aim of strengthening the student’s ability to communicate effectively in both business and social situations. The materials used will emphasize the vocabulary and grammar useful in everyday activities. Each class meets twice a week for a total of 18 hours of instruction.


LEVEL I

(Introductory)
For students with no previous background in Japanese.
Elementary conversation, vocabulary and simple sentence structure will be taught.

LEVEL II
(Beginner) finished Level 1 and 2 of our regular Japanese Course.
For students with some background in Japanese. Same material as above but in greater depth. Some social situational survival skills will also be introduced.

LEVEL III
(Advanced Beginner) finished Level 3 or 4 of our regular Japanese Course.
The course will focus on skills needed to survive in Japan. Frequently used expressions will be practiced in context.

LEVEL IV
(Intermediate) finished Level 5, 6, or 7 of our regular Japanese Course.
The course will focus on strengthening speaking skills by having students engage in various exercises.

LEVEL V
(Intermediate Advanced) finished Level 8, 9 and Int. Speaking & Listening of our regular Japanese Course.
Basic keigo training will be taught to master the honorific and humble expressions that are indispensable not only in business but also in social situations. Students will learn various expressions.

New Class
LEVEL VI
(Advanced) higher than Level 10 of our regular Japanese Course.
For students who have already achieved excellent Japanese conversational skills and who seek the occasion to use these expertise. In this advanced class, the Japanese four-character idiomatic compounds (四字熟語) are introduced. For mastering 四字熟語, the students will study and discuss usage of the compounds in this informal yet top-leveled class. Their proper use will make students’ vocabulary even richer and their conversation more literate.

Instructors:
All of the Toyota Language Center’s instructors are native Japanese with extensive experience.

Ms. Yuko Aizawa has taught at the Sendagaya Japanese Institute in Tokyo, Japan and at the Royal Hawaiian Academy in the United States. She has been an instructor at the Toyota Language Center since 1994.

Ms. Reiko Akai has a Bachelor’s Degree in Linguistics, and has worked in the private sector in Japan. She has taught English and Japanese in Japan, and has been a private tutor of Japanese in the United States for five years.

Ms. Keiko Hama has taught Japanese in Germany and the US for over ten years. She received her MA in Japanese Sociology and Linguistics from the University of Heidelberg. Since then, she has been an interpreter, translator and Japanese teacher in the private and public sector.

Ms. Masako Inkyo
has a university degree is in Japanese Calligraphy and a license to teach literature in Middle and High School. She is a member of the three largest shodō professional associations in Japan. She has received many awards, including first prizes in both shodō and pen calligraphy and kanji in national competitions sponsored by the Ministry of Education.

Ms. Mami Miyashita earned a Japanese Teaching License in Japan, a certificate of Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language from Ohio State University and a Master’s Degree from West Chester University. She has been involved with foreign language education for more than nineteen years, most recently at the University of Delaware from 1999 to 2005.

Ms. Hiromi Noguchi has a Master’s Degree in Teaching a Foreign Language, Japanese, from the Monterey Institute of International Studies in California, and is seeking a Doctor’s degree in Applied Linguistics from the Teacher’s College, Columbia University. She has taught Japanese at Columbia and at the Monterey Institute of International Studies.
