3.11: Disaster and Change in Japan

Tuesday, March 12, 2013

Richard J. Samuels, Dr. George Packard

The most powerful earthquake in Japan's recorded history produced a devastating tsunami and caused an unprecedented meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. This triple catastrophe claimed almost 20,000 lives, destroyed whole towns and ultimately will cost hundreds of billions of dollars. Drawing on his new book, 3.11: Disaster and Change in Japan, Richard J. Samuels, Ford International Professor of Political Science and Director of the Center for International Studies, MIT, offers the first broad assessment of the disaster's impact on Japan's government and society--and on the U.S. alliance. He shows how a rhetoric of crisis in national security, energy and local government now defines post-3/11 politics and public policy.

Followed by a book signing and reception. Books may be purchased by cash or check only.
