The DPRK has recently announced the completion of its nuclear weapons program and begun a “peace offensive,” sending a delegation to the Olympic winter games and setting up two summits with the presidents of the ROK and the U.S. These moves follow a long-standing pattern in which North Korean policy swings from aggression to reconciliation, challenging the international community’s ability to respond cohesively and to maintain deterrence strategies. The question now facing the international community is whether the détente between North and South Korea can be maintained and whether a dialogue on denuclearization can be started through a summit process. If not, the prospects for conflict on the Korean peninsula are likely to grow. Join our experts as they assess the immediate aftermath of the Olympic détente and prospects for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
