『 伊豆の踊子 』     作：川端康成 　 　(１９２６年）
主人公の「私」は一高（現在の東京大学）の学生。孤児根性に歪んだ自分に耐えられなくなった「私」は、伊豆へ一人旅に出て旅芸人の一座と出会う。一座は四十女が1人と男が1人に少女が3人。「私」は一番若い踊子・薫に淡い恋心を抱く。当時は低い身分とされた芸人たちと交流し、素朴で無垢な薫と接するうちに、「私」は自分の心が次第に解放されてゆくのに気づく。川端が実体験を元に書いた初期の代表作である。

『竹取物語』 　　　　　　　　　　　
平安時代初期（10世紀半ば）までには成立したとされる日本最古の物語で、『かぐや姫』としても知られる。竹取の翁は、ある日竹の中から小さな女の子を見つけて娘として育てる。輝くばかりに美しく成長した娘「かぐや姫」は、5人の男性から求婚されるも難題を突きつけ、帝がお召しになろうとしても応じない。やがて姫は、自分が月から来た者であり8月の満月の夜に月に帰らねばならない、と告げる。。。

SYNOPSIS
 
“The Izu Dancer” by Yasunori Kawabata (1926)      
The unnamed narrator, is a student at Ichi-ko (now Tokyo University). He goes on a solo trip to Izu, mired in thoughts about what he sees as his defective personality.  In Izu, he meets a group of itinerant entertainers, one woman in her forties, one man, and three girls. He falls in love with the youngest dancer, Kaoru. Although entertainers were considered “low class” at the time, he realizes that he feels liberated as he deepens his relationship with Kaoru and her group. One of Kawabata’s early works, based on his own experience.

“The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter” Author and date unknown.
Dating back to the 10th century, this is considered Japan’s oldest folktale. It is also known as “Princess Kaguya” (Kaguya-Hime)” . One day, an old bamboo cutter finds a tiny little girl inside a bamboo stalk and raises her as his daughter. As she grows up, her extraordinary beauty attracts five suitors, but she sets them impossible tasks to accomplish, not wanting to marry anyone. Even the Emperor cannot change her mind. She then reveals that she is a princess from the moon and will have to return on the night of the next full moon.
