Utagawa Kuniyoshi's vivid scenes from history and legend, wildly popular 150 years ago, are a major influence on the work of today's manga and anime artists. This exhibition features over 130 dramatic depictions of giant spiders, skeletons and toads; Chinese ruffians; women warriors; haggard ghosts; and desperate samurai combat.

Admission:  $12
students & seniors $10;
Japan Society members and children under 16 FREE.
Admission is FREE to all on Friday nights , 6-9 PM.



Japan Society is proud to participate in the Blue Star Museum program, a partnership among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families and more than 700 museums, to offer free Gallery admission for all active duty military personnel and their families.*

The free admission program is available to any bearer of a Geneva Convention Common Access Card (CAC), a DD Form 1173, or a DD Form 1173-1, which includes active duty military and five immediate family members, Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard, and Reserve. Immediate family members under the age of 10 must be accompanied by an appropriate ID holder.

Docent-led walk-in tours are conducted Tuesday-Sunday at 12:30 pm. Japanese language tours are conducted Friday nights at 6 pm by appointment only. Tours are free with admission and approximately 30 minutes in duration.

Impressions Features Essays on Kuniyoshi
The current issue of Impressions (number 31, 2010) includes informative background essays about prints in the current Kuniyoshi exhibition. Impressions is the annual journal of the Japanese Art Society of America (JASA), joint promoters of our April 17 Symposium on Kuniyoshi.



Graphic Heroes, Magic Monsters: Japanese Prints by Utagawa Kuniyoshi from the Arthur R. Miller Collection has been organized by the Royal Academy of Arts in collaboration with Arthur R. Miller and The British Museum. Prints from the Miller Collection have been generously loaned to Japan Society by the American Friends of The British Museum.
