Famed Japanese Photographer Discusses 60-year Career and Two-Day NYC Performance in November
An Evening with Daido Moriyama
Thursday, November 3, 2011, 6:30 pm, at Japan Society
New York, NY – Visiting New York City to recreate his 1974 performance PRINTING SHOW at the Aperture Foundation, famed Japanese photographer Daido Moriyama appears at Japan Society to discuss his recent photography and early projects, such as the series 71 New York as well as PRINTING SHOW. Moderated by International Center of Photographycurator Christopher Phillips, An Evening with Daido Moriyama takes place Thursday, November 3, 6:30 pm, at Japan Society, and is followed by a reception. The discussion is presented in conjunction with PRINTING SHOW—TKY, part of the Performa 2011 new visual art performance biennial November 1-21.
PRINTING SHOW—TKY (held at the Aperture Gallery November 4th & 5th) is a re-staging of Moriyama's legendary performance PRINTING SHOW, originally held in 1974 in a Tokyo gallery space. In lieu of mounting photographic prints on the walls, Moriyama brought in a photocopy machine and silk screen printing station, from which he generated an ad hoc photobook composed of photocopied sheets staple-bound with a silk screen cover. The book, Another Country in New York, used drew from photographs he shot in New York City during the winter of 1971. In the 2011 re-staging, Moriyama will produce a photobook titled TKY, featuring work shot in Tokyo over the last ten years. Attendees to the event will edit and sequence their own copies of TKY, choosing from a menu of 54 double-sided sheets and two cover options. PRINTING SHOW—TKY is organized by Ivan Vartanian of Goliga.
