Japan Society’s Toyota Language Center offers a variety of courses, workshops and intensives throughout the year in Japanese language and shodo (Japanese calligraphy), among other select courses. Founded in 1972, we are the premiere Japanese language center in New York City. We hope you will study with us!

Open Courses

Winter Shodo Open Level
Hands-on workshop classes introduce the techniques of shodo (Japanese calligraphy), an art form using a brush and charcoal ink on paper, wood plaques and fabric

Winter Conversational Japanese
A conversation-intensive course, with the aim of strengthening the student’s ability to communicate effectively in social situations. Some previous language experience required.

Winter Japanese: Level 1
Designed to introduce elementary Japanese to students with no previous background in the language.

Hiragana and Katakana Workshops
These mini-workshops allow the beginning students of Japanese the opportunity to quickly and efficiently master the reading of the two Japanese syllabaries, hiragana and katakana.

Japanese Language Teacher Training: Introductory

This program is a practical course for those who wish to learn essential classroom teaching skills in order to teach Japanese in classroom or individual settings, and for those who have had little or no formal training in teaching Japanese as a foreign language.

English Courses

Thirty-eight hours of beginner and intermediate/advanced English as a Second Language (ESL) conversation. 38時間にわたる初級及び中/上級英語学習者を対象にした日本人向け英会話教室。

Spring Japanese
Thirteen levels of Japanese are offered this spring, from beginner to advanced, emphasizing conversation, listening, reading and writing. Four Kanji courses and other specialized courses, such as Anime, Breaking News in Japan and Everyday Japanese, are also offered this spring.

Shodo & Weekend Shodo
Hands-on workshops that introduce the techniques of shodō. Students at any level of experience are welcome; Japanese language skills are not required.

New Course

12-A: Breaking News in Japan: Students in this class will learn about the latest events that made news in Japan. They will also discuss social implications and how it compares with other cultures. Each class is heavily discussion-based and accompanied by articles, news clips, and videos. Wednesdays, February 1—April 5. 6:10-8 PM. Instructor: Kurahara
