Uki Uki NihonGO! Lesson #12 Small Talk Part 3

Welcome to Uki Uki NihonGO + Culture!

In our episodes, we looked at common small talk phrases in casual and polite speech.

Today, we’ll focus on small talk in respectful speech.
You can use this when you run into someone you want to show extra respect to, such as your boss, teacher, or client/guest/customer.

Let’s say you just ran into your boss and general manager, まつだぶちょう in the elevator. Like in polite speech, the weather is one of the most common topics of small talk. But here, the tone of your voice and your body language may be slightly different, such as a deeper bow.

The conversation often goes like this.

あ、まつだぶちょう。おはようございます! A, Matsuda buchou. Ohayou gozaimasu! (Oh, Mr. Matsuda. Good morning!)
おはようございます。 Ohayou gozaimasu. (Good morning.)
きょうは、すこしさむいですね。 Kyou wa, sukoshi samui desune. (It’s a little cold today, isn’t it?)
そうですね。 Sou desune. (Yes, it is.)
では、しつれいいたします。Dewa, shitsurei itashimasu. (Good bye.)
どうも。Doumo. (Bye.)

Notice your boss doesn’t use the respectful speech. Instead, they use polite speech or sometimes casual speech when they speak with their subordinates.

Here are some variations on the weather.

ひどいあめですね。Hidoi ame desune. (It’s raining badly, isn’t it?)
あついですね。Atsui desune. (It’s so hot, isn’t it?)
さむいですね。Samui desune. (It’s freezing, isn’t it?)
あたたかいですね。Atatakai desune. (It’s nice & warm, isn’t it?)
すずしいですね。Suzushii desune. (It’s breezy, isn’t it?)

Next time you ran into an acquaintance or co-worker, please try out these quick phrases!
