Chawanad Luansang, Co-founder, Openspace Community Architects

Chawanad Luansang is the Founder and Director of the Bangkok-based Openspace Community Architects, an organization of community architects who are revolutionizing the approach to rural and urban community revitalization by empowering villagers and slum-dwellers to lead, facilitate and expand their community activism beyond the revitalization process. Through successful roll-outs in typically overlooked rural communities across Thailand, and meticulous documentation through film, web and print-based media, Chawanad and Openspace are currently fine-tuning a scalable model that centers on a participatory, collaborative community design process. For example, he and his team are currently running the participatory design planning of a community hospital on the small island of Phuket province, where there are few public healthcare services for local people. He also works for the Asian Coalition for Housing Rights (ACHR) as an architect and coordinator for community architecture in Asia. A promising young leader in the field of community architecture and rural and urban housing planning, he is an Ashoka Fellow (2008) in the field of civic engagement.
