Katsuji Imata (今田克司) - Co-Director, CSO Network Japan

Katsuji Imata has been Co-Director of the CSO (Civil Society Organization) Network Japan since April 2004. He was seconded to Hottokenai Sekai No Mazushisa - Japanese campaign for the Global Call to Action against Poverty (GCAP), a worldwide anti-poverty campaign and served its secretariat director (2005-2006). He now serves on its Board of Directors.

Building on the success of its global campaign in 2005 whose "whiteband" symbol became known to people in all walks of life, GCAP(www.whiteband.org) is now active in more than 100 countries as a broad-based civil society call to change the political and economic structure that produces world poverty. Hottokenai (www.hottokenai.jp) has been successful in raising awareness about world poverty among the Japanese public, selling more than 4.5 million whitebands in Japan.

CSO Network Japan focuses its work on conducting research concerning the roles of NGOs and CSOs that work on global issues and engaging the public in such issues through publications and public campaigns.

In the 1990s, Imata was based in the San Francisco Bay Area and founded Japan-U.S. Community Education and Exchange (JUCEE), serving as executive director (1996-2000) in Oakland and President/CEO (2000-2004) in Japan. JUCEE organized nonprofit internship and fellowship programs for young leaders and nonprofit professionals from Japan and the U.S. For his work of promoting nonprofit exchange, he received Certificate of Honor by the Board of Supervisors of the City and County of San Francisco in 1999.

He has written and edited publications on Japanese international NGOs, and written and spoken extensively on nonprofit management, civil society, and U.S. and Japanese nonprofit sectors. He has an MPP (Master of Public Policy) from University of California at Berkeley, MA in interdisciplinary studies in social science from the University of Tokyo, and BA from International Christian University in Tokyo. He also serves on the Board of Directors of Japan NPO Center and Japan NPO Research Association (JANPORA).
