Taneo Kato (� 藤種男) - Secretary General, Asahi Beer Art Foundation & Executive Director, Yokohama Arts Foundation


Kato is known as a pioneer for supporting and nurturing Japan’s art scene. Because of his knowledge and activities Asahi Brewery invited Kato to join the company when they founded the Department of Corporate Cultural Activities in 1991. Asahi Brewery not only gives out grants, but also supports young artists and produces artistic projects. Kato is highly regarded more as a corporate art producer than as person in charge of corporate philanthropy. His wide range of activities includes producing the Asahi Art Festival, Concerts in the Lobby series, Lecture series on Culture and Music, and supporting artists. Having prepared the opening of the Asahi Beer Oyamazaki Villa Museum,he started supervising the museum in 1996. In 2002, he was appointed as the Secretary General of Asahi Beer Arts Foundation.

In addition, as the Executive Director of the Yokohama Arts Foundation, Kato is in charge of projects for art creation and citizen participation overlooking 12 facilities, including the Museum of Yokohama and Yokohama Minatomirai Hall. He is the author of Connecting Society and Art – Practice by the Connectors and co-author of Visual of Civilization and Culture – Cultural Economy of Evolutional Society. In the 60s, he dropped out of college as a result of his active participation in student movements and ended up working in a small factory as a lathe-worker for some time. Kato was born in Hyogo Prefecture.
