Beyond Tōhaku: Make a Masterpiece

One of the most provocative and controversial artistic figures of his day, Hasegawa Tōhaku broke with established norms and challenged famous rivals to emerge as Japan’s leading painter. A school of followers carried on his name for over a century after his death. Tōhaku’s legacy continues to this day in the work of contemporary Japanese painters who unabashedly push artistic boundaries while maintaining a reverence for the past.

In this unique workshop, create your own Tōhaku-inspired masterpiece guided by acclaimed NYC-based artist Tomokazu Matsuyama, as he discusses the impact of Tōhaku on his own practice of painting vibrant, multipanel works. Using similar techniques as Tōhaku and Matsuyama, participants will create a mixed media painting on fine artist’s paper to take away.

Space is limited. All materials provided. Includes a walk-through of A Giant Leap: The Transformation of Hasegawa Tōhaku with the artist and Japan Society Gallery’s Curator of Exhibition Interpretation.

About Tomokazu Matsuyama
Tomokazu Matsuyama was born in Japan, 1976 and currently lives and works in New York City. His important exhibitions include the Japan Society, New York, the Harvard University, Massachusetts, the Katzen Arts Center at American University Museum, Washington D.C., and Museum of Contemporary Art Museum, Sydney, Australia, among other galleries and institutions. Matsuyama’s work responds to his own bi-cultural experience of growing up between Japan and America by bringing together aspects of both Eastern and Western aesthetic systems.
