The Japanese economy grew with amazing speed after WWII. This growth was supported by a uniquely Japanese management style that reflects traditional customs, absorbs useful innovation from all around the world and aims at maximum high-skill employment for the home workforce. Japan quickly established itself as a player in industrial output across a variety of consumer and business-to-business categories. Japan’s domestic consumption sufficed during the earliest stages of the growth period, but innovative manufacturing know-how and high-quality, well-selected products soon demanded global distribution that spurred additional advances in logistics and international financial services.

ORIX is a standard-bearer for modern Japanese economic growth. It is rooted in an innovative response to Japan’s startling demand for industrial equipment 50 years ago–the introduction and development of lease financing techniques. Yoshihiko Miyauchi has been piloting ORIX from its earliest innovations, through its navigation of constantly changing global waters, to its evolution into a domestic and international financial services powerhouse. In this lecture, Mr. Miyauchi shares the story of modern changes in Japan’s management style from the perspective of an inside witness and participant in the events that have shaped those changes.
