Capitalizing on the immense success of its title song (renamed “Sukiyaki” in the West, the first and only Japanese tune to top the Billboard Hot 100), Nikkatsu studio produced this charming juvenile delinquent drama starring its fresh-faced star—and the hit single’s original crooner—Kyu Sakamoto. Selected by architectural firm Atelier Bow-Wow to coincide with Made in Tokyo: Architecture and Living, 1964/2020 , Keep Your Chin Up features Japan’s iconic National Stadium (1958) during the film’s memorable musical finale—a montage of Japanese sports, industry and everyday life that captures the country’s bustling productivity and spirit of anticipation for the 1964 Summer Games.

1962, 91 min., 35mm, color, in Japanese with English subtitles. Directed by Toshio Masuda. With Kyu Sakamoto, Sayuri Yoshinaga, Mitsuo Hamada, Hideki Takahashi.

Tickets: $14/$11 seniors & students/$5 members
