Security Challenges in Northeast Asia

In the Northeast Asian region, North Korea’s nuclear tests and missile launches tend to capture the headlines in mainstream media. But the economic dynamism of the region, the growing power of nationalist thought, the rise of China, Japan’s effort to play a larger security role, Russia’s effort to rebuild its influence and questions about U.S. posture in the region all present significant challenges to constructing a stable regional order in Northeast Asia. This program will explore what the United States, Japan and Russia can do to promote peace and security in the region.
