Calls for greater presence of women in the upper echelons of corporate and political power in the US and Japan have grown stronger as globalization encourages greater workplace diversity and official endorsements have been made by Prime Minister Abe and officials in the US. While the workforce participation rate of women in Japan has grown, rates of employment in managerial and executive roles remain significantly below the average of the OECD countries. Could quota systems and extended child-care leave serve as a solution to this long standing problem? What types of policies and systems established in the U.S., which have helped make major strides in the advancement of women, can be adapted for the Japanese workplace? Further, in what ways does the U.S also remain hindered by gender disparity issues, and how can these be addressed? At this pivotal point in both nation’s futures, we bring together a panel of female leaders from both Japan and the U.S. to examine the potential for and challenges of female empowerment and work-life balance.
