We remember the legendary Ken Takakura (1931-2014) a year after his passing with a screening of this cherished classic from award-winning director Yoji Yamada. After being released from prison on parole, a soft-spoken coal miner makes his way towards Hokkaido and the small town where his wife may or may not be waiting for him. He is picked up along the way by two young people – each with their own reasons for hitting the road – and the three strangers undertake a journey of self-discovery as they travel the Japanese countryside. This touching and sweetly comic film swept the first Japan Academy Prize ceremony with wins in nearly every category.

1977, 108 min., 35mm, color, in Japanese with live English subtitles. Directed by Yoji Yamada. With Ken Takakura, Kaori Momoi, Chieko Baisho, Tetsuya Takeda, Kiyoshi Atsumi.
