Left to right: Michael Auslin, Kent E. Calder, Hugh Patrick, Evans Revere.

This meeting follows up on previous discussion in Washington held over the preceding weekend as part of the Pacific Forum CSIS Young Leaders Program. This session convenes a group representing Japan’s next generation of Japan-U.S. relationship thinkers, along with U.S. Japan watchers, to share perspectives on the state of the Japan-U.S. Security Treaty on the eve of its 50th anniversary. The group discusses the history of the Treaty and examines challenges to its potency moving forward. External areas of concern include the influence of China’s recent economic and military rise and continued tensions on the Korean peninsula. Internally, the changes in leadership in Japan and the U.S. set the relationship in uncharted territory – will the DPJ maintain the alliance as the LDP left it, or will the new regime, as DPJ leaders claim, take an approach that considers Japan’s interests first and foremost, in possible conflict with U.S. policy.
