After School Professional Development Program for K-12 Educators
in cooperation with the NYC Department of Education

This course is also open to the general public.

In this course, participants will examine various literary forms, including novels, poetry, short stories, drama, and film (in English translation) from historical and contemporary Japan and analyze the social, historical, and literary implications of cinematic and written texts. Film and literature dealing with similar themes from different perspectives will be compared, contrasted and used as the basis for the creation of practical teaching ideas and cognitively challenging student activities. Issues addressed in the course will include social class, war, family, gender & sexuality, identity, and ethnicity issues in Japan. Recommended for grades 6-12 ELA, social studies, film, and theater teachers. 3P credit is available from NYC Department of Education After School Professional Development Program. This course is also open to the general public.
