New York's Japan Society Pledges Half of Ticket Sales Through June 2011 to Earthquake Relief, Announces Benefit Concert in April

March 15, 2011

New York, NY – Japan Society will donate fifty percent of ticket sales made from March 14 through June 30, 2011, to aid victims of the earthquake that struck Japan, the Society announced.

The money will go to the Society’s Japan Earthquake Relief Fund, which has collected over $500,000 (as of March 15) in donations from the public to support organizations that directly help victims recover from the devastating effects of the earthquake and tsunamis in Japan.

“We are tremendously impressed and humbled by the generosity, trust, and overwhelming support from the American people, Japanese people living in the U.S. and people around the world,” said Japan Society president Motoatsu Sakurai. “Donating half of the proceeds from our remaining events this season gives people the opportunity to enjoy Japanese culture and at the same time help Japan recover in the difficult weeks and months ahead.”

Among dozens of upcoming performances, film screenings, lectures, and family events scheduled through June at Japan Society, is the major exhibition Bye Bye Kitty!!! Between Heaven and Hell in Contemporary Japanese Art, opening March 18 and running through June 12. For a full schedule of events, visit

In addition, Japan Society is organizing the Concert for Japan on April 9. The day-long benefit will feature 12 hours of live music acts and performances, as well as activities for all ages, such as making paper cranes and washi lanterns. All admissions sales will go to the relief fund.

Taking advantage of Japan Society’s expertise in bringing together American and Japanese experts to collaborate on social issues, The Japan Earthquake Relief Fund, established March 11, will work with Japanese and American nonprofit organizations that are on the frontlines of disaster relief and recovery in Japan. One hundred percent of the tax-deductible contributions to the fund will go to these organizations that directly help victims of the disaster.

Those wishing to donate to the fund can go to or mail a check to Japan Society, 333 East 47th Street, New York, New York 10017; Attn: Japan Earthquake Relief Fund. Checks should be made payable to Japan Society and indicate “Japan Earthquake Relief Fund” on the check. For additional information, email
