How can I purchase a membership?
You have the option of purchasing your new or renewed membership online, in person at the Welcome Desk or by calling our Membership office at (212) 715-1270. If you are also planning to register for classes in our Language Center, we recommend speaking with them directly at (212) 715-1269. Our facilities can accept cash, credit and personal check.
How do I renew my membership?
You can renew your membership online by logging into your account, in-person at the Welcome Desk or by calling our Membership office at (212) 715-1270. As you near your membership expiration, we send out renewal notifications in the mail with renewal information enclosed which you can also return by mail in our prepaid envelope.
Can I purchase a membership as a gift?
Yes. If you would like to send a membership to someone as a gift, you can call our Membership office at (212) 715-1270, and a representative will assist you. Please note that memberships take time to process so if you are hoping to have this gift in time for a special event, please give our team enough notice to accommodate your request. At least 10 business days is suggested.
When does my membership expire?
Japan Society memberships are valid for one year as of the month you joined or renewed. The expiration date can be found on the back of your membership card. You can also call our Membership office at (212) 715-1270 or email at email@example.com to inquire.
When will I get my membership card(s)?
We have gone digital with our membership packages! Your membership will be activated immediately and a digital membership card will be sent to your email. You will have the option to let us know if you want to continue receiving a physical membership card on our renewal forms and online. If you did not select to receive a physical card or unsure if you did, email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery. Members purchasing a Sustaining membership or above will automatically receive a physical card.
How do I purchase a Student/Senior/Disabled membership?
To purchase a Student/Senior/Disabled membership, please select the membership level and related discount you’re registering for on our paper forms or enter one of the below discount codes at checkout. Our office may ask for supporting documents for verification. If asked for supporting documentation, please send a scanned copy to email@example.com. Also, please reach out to our Membership office directly at (212) 715-1270 or by the previously mentioned email if you have any questions regarding access to our building and programs.

I lost my membership card. How can I get a new one? Can I visit without it?
Yes, you are still entitled to enjoy all your benefits without your membership card, as long as your current membership is valid. To request your new membership card, please contact our Membership team at (212) 715-1270 or firstname.lastname@example.org. To visit without your card, simply present your membership number when visiting our box office.
Can I give my membership card to a friend or family member to use?
Please do not give your membership card to friends and family that are not on your membership. Our membership cards are not transferrable. To request to add someone to your membership or to upgrade your membership, please contact our Membership team at (212) 715-1270 or email@example.com.
How do I update my contact information?

How can I find my membership ID?
Your membership ID is listed on the back of your membership card and in your emailed receipt. You can also find your ID on your online account by selecting the account icon at the top right-hand corner of your screen. Click on ‘Membership Details’ in the drop-down menu and then a pop-up window will appear with your Membership Details.
How many guests may I bring to the Gallery exhibitions that will be covered by my membership?
Members at the Sustaining level and above may purchase unlimited discounted Gallery admission tickets for $5. Circle of Friends members are also entitled to complimentary Gallery admission tickets for accompanied guests for each visit in accordance with their membership level. To purchase discount or complimentary Gallery admission tickets through our ticketing site log in using your member account and select the number of member tickets requested and then add the General Admission tickets you would like to reserve. Our system will automatically apply the discount or complementary tickets available to your membership at checkout.

How much of my membership is tax-deductible?
Tax-deductibility varies with membership level. Please reference the following chart for the deductible amount of your membership:

The company I work for is a Corporate member. What benefits do I receive?
Corporate members receive different benefits depending on the corporation’s membership level. Corporate membership does not necessarily include all of the same benefits as an Individual membership. To find out more about your Corporate membership benefits, please call our Corporate membership office at (212) 715-1250.
What are Member Openings? How many guests may I bring?
Member Openings are members-only previews and receptions for the Japan Society Gallery’s exhibitions. Members have exclusive access to our exhibition before the public. All members receive an invitation by mail or email, and one guest is admitted.
Box Office/Membership Account
How can I create a Japan Society account for memberships and ticketing?
Only members have an account. To create an online account, please visit boxoffice.japansociety.org and look for the “Become A Member” icon on the top right-hand side of the screen and then click on “Join Now”. The system will walk you through the rest of the process to purchase a membership. If you already have an account, be sure to log in to avoid creating duplicate records in our system and ensure that you receive the benefits you are entitled to. If you are having difficulty accessing an old account, you can click “Forgot Password” or you can email the Membership team at email@example.com and we will be happy to assist you.
How can I purchase tickets online?
Click on the “Select Tickets” button that is next to the event you wish to attend. You will be directed to a page with a brief description of the event along with the various ticket types available. Depending on the type of event, you will be directed to select the date, time, and number of tickets you would like to purchase. Your tickets will appear in the Order Summary window on the right side of the screen. Once you have added all of your tickets, select the “Proceed to Checkout” button in the Order Summery to be directed to the checkout screen.
How many tickets am I entitled to buy at the membership price?
Members can purchase up to two tickets at the discounted price.
Why won’t my Language Center and Virtual Cinema (Film) login allow me to buy tickets?
Unfortunately, the Language Center and Virtual Cinema are on a separate booking platform than our box office ticketing and memberships. We apologize for the inconvenience at this time, and are working towards having an integrated system.
How can I reset my password?
You can reset your password by calling our Membership office at (212) 715-1270 or click “Forgot Password” on the Sign In screen. A link will be sent to your email address and you will be able to set a new password by following the link.
It won't recognize my login!
In the case that your login information is not recognized by the system, or it says your username is already in use, please contact the Membership office at (212) 715-1270 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
How do I sign up for eNewsletters?
You can visit this link and choose the eNewsletters of your interest. All Japan Society members receive the members-only eNewsletter with notifications about perks, events, and offers related to your membership.
How do I find out member benefit information such as film discount codes, member-only events, and other member perks?
Periodically, members will receive special notifications about perks, events, and offers related to your membership. Please watch your email to make sure you stay up-to-date on your membership offerings.
How can I unsubscribe from eNewsletters?
Please contact the Membership office at (212) 715-1270 or email@example.com and indicate which eNewsletters you no longer wish to receive from us.
Is Japan Society eligible to receive matching gifts from my company?
Yes. Having a company match your membership gift is an easy way to double your contribution to help sustain Japan Society’s programs and operations. Please check with your employer to see if your affiliated company matches charitable donations.
Is Japan Society wheelchair/stroller accessible?
Yes, we are wheelchair and stroller accessible. Certain exhibitions and programs may require that guests leave strollers and large bags in our secure lockers or coat check area for the duration of your visit however.
What are the Membership Office hours?
Membership office hours are Monday to Friday, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM by phone and email. We do not have drop-in access for the public however, so if you plan to visit in person please check our Box Office hours.
Will Japan Society sell or distribute member/donor information?
