Get to Know Japan: Kanagawa
Discover the charms of Kanagawa! Located just south of Tokyo, Kanagawa Prefecture is a unique mixture of Japanese and foreign roots. Famed for such sites as the cosmopolitan port city of Yokohama, the grand Buddhist temples of Kamakura, and the quaint hot spring town of Hakone, Kanagawa is the perfect balance of traditional and modern Japan. The prefecture is the home of artisanal woodcraft such as Kamakura-bori, carved wood ware with lacquer coating, and yosegi, a geometric mosaic of wood pieces typically used for decoration, created with pride and specialized artisanship. Hakone is known for its natural hot springs and ryokan, or traditional Japanese inns, which deliver true omotenashi. Yokohama Harbor is the site of the momentous Harris Treaty of 1858, which opened up the port as an international hub to the U.S. and other countries, launching Japan into a new era.
