One Year Later

Commemorating the One-Year Anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake & Tsunami

On March 11, 2011, Japan’s Tohoku coastal region was devastated by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami. The months after these disasters brought to the forefront incredible stories of resilience and generosity as Japan quickly began recovery efforts. In March of 2012, Japan Society presents a series of programs and events around the one-year anniversary of the disasters, commemorating the victims and examining the progress of Japan’s recovery and prospects for the future.

Reflections on March 11

One Year Later: A Day of Reflection

Sunday, March 11, 11 AM—5 PM

Japan Society will commemorate the one-year anniversary of March 11, 2011 with a day of reflection and contemplation. Understanding that people will wish to mourn those who were lost, reflect upon what has been learned from the tragedy, and consider how Japan has moved forward in varying and highly individual ways, Japan Society will provide a venue for both individual and collective reflection. The day will feature programs for children and documentary films for adults. Ambassador Shigeyuki Hiroki, Consul General of Japan in New York, will offer remarks at 2:30 PM, and preside over a moment of silence for the lives lost in the disasters at 2:46 PM.

Collaborating organizations for One Year Later programming include Consortium for Japan Relief; Consulate General of Japan in New York;; JP GIRLS NYC; Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of New York, Inc. (JCCI); Japanese American Association of New York; The Nippon Club Inc.; TOMODACHI; and U.S.-Japan Council.
