Toray’s Strategy for Expanding in the Composite Materials Industry

New York, NY - From the primary structure of the Boeing 787 to light-weight compressed natural gas (CNG) containers, carbon fiber is in greater demand than ever as a solution to the issues of sustainable energy policy and global warming. Toray, which entered the carbon fiber business in 1971 and has since become the world's number one supplier of the material, has spent over 40 years developing high-performance carbon fiber for a variety of applications in the aerospace, industrial and sporting goods industries. With its acquisition of Zoltek, announced in September of 2013, it will also solidify its position in wind power related and automobile structural parts.

In Toray’s Strategy for Expanding in the Composite Materials Industry, Moriyuki Onishi, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Torayca & Advanced Composites Division of Toray Industries, Inc., discusses Toray's strategy for further expanding its business in composite materials and carbon fiber, with a particular focus on its regional strategy in the U.S. Presided by United Airline's Ron Baur, the talk takes place Tuesday, February 11, at Japan Society.

Moriyuki Onishi serves as Senior Vice President, Member of the Board, Member of the Executive Committee and General Manager, Torayca & Advanced Composites Division, at Toray Industries, Inc. Onishi began working at Toray Industries, Inc. in 1972 and entered the carbon fiber business in 1983. His overseas assignments include serving as Sales & Marketing Director of Soficar (now Toray Carbon Fibers Europe, S.A.) as well as serving as President and CEO of Toray Composites (America), Inc. In 2006, he was named Vice President, Member of the Board and General Manager, Torayca Division, at Toray Industries, Inc. In June of 2010, he was named Senior Vice President and Deputy General Manager, Torayca and Advanced Composites Division, of Toray Industries, Inc. Onishi became General Manager of Torayca & Advanced Composites Division in 2011 and took on appointment as Member of the Executive Committee in 2012. He holds a degree from Tokyo University of Foreign Studies.

Ron Baur is Vice President Fleet for United Airlines. Baur is responsible for all aspects relating to the acquisition and disposition of all owned and leased aircraft as well as developing and managing United’s Fleet Plan. Prior to this position, Baur served as Staff Vice President of Fleet Planning and Management for Continental Airlines. Baur began his career at Continental in 1990 and has held various positions with increasing responsibility in Engineering, Finance and Fleet. Ron has an Aeronautical Engineering degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology and an MBA in Finance from California State University.
