On the occasion of the 10-year anniversary of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake (3.11), Japan Society interviewed Ambassador Motoatsu Sakurai, President of Japan Society from 2009-2019, who took quick and decisive action the day after 3.11 to establish the Japan Earthquake Relief Fund (JERF). JERF raised over $14 million—the 6th to 7th largest amount raised in the U.S. nonprofit sector and the largest amount ever raised by a U.S. nonprofit organization not usually focused on emergency relief.
