A Tribute to Donald Richie (1924–2013)

A Tribute to Donald Richie (1924-2013), Part 2
Richie's Electric Eight: The Bold & the Daring

This two-part series honors the life of film critic and author Donald Richie (1924-2013), who was instrumental in introducing Japanese culture and film to the world. In Part 2, our Globus Film Series for 2014, we continue to explore how Richie shared his thoughts about Japanese society and culture as seen through the medium of film.  As with Part 1 (Richie's Fantastic Five: Kurosawa, Mizoguchi, Ozu, Yanagimachi & Kore-eda), which was presented as a monthly series from October 2013 to February 2014, film scholar and former Japan Society Film Program Director Kyoko Hirano continues to serve as curator.

Curator's note:
Looking far beyond the stereotypical Japan of Mt. Fuji and cherry blossoms or subservient geisha and salarymen, Donald Richie recognized the unconventional beauty in the everyday lives of ordinary people, celebrating the spirit of those who resist authority, the resilience of women who survive and outsmart a male-centered world, and the battles of those discriminated against by society. Richie supported the Japanese New Wave movement of Shohei Imamura and Nagisa Oshima, highlighted young and emerging talents such as Kohei Oguri, Kazuo Hara, Shunsuke Kaneko, Makoto Shinozaki and Kazuhiro Soda, and also championed the important classic films of Yoshitaro Nomura. For Richie, the independent spirit shown by these directors in portraying taboo subjects and their artistic endeavors exploring new forms of cinematic expression are reasons for us to see their films, from which we discover something new about the world we live in. --Kyoko Hirano, series curator
