2020 Late Spring Conversational Japanese



Updated 3/24/2020: These courses will be conducted online via Zoom. To participate fully, you will need access to a device with internet, microphone, and camera (such as a laptop, smartphone, or tablet).  Further instructions will be provided the week before classes begin. Please note that all times listed are New York time (ET/UTC-04:00).

Course Information

The curriculum is conversation-intensive, with the aim of strengthening the student’s ability to communicate effectively in social situations. The course materials will emphasize vocabulary and grammar that are useful in everyday activities. Each class meets twice a week online via Zoom for a total of 18 hours of instruction.

Beginner Conversation: For students who have finished Level 1 or 2 of our Japanese Courses, or equivalent. For students with some background in Japanese. Some social/situational survival skills will also be introduced.
Textbook (see below for details): Marugoto Japanese Language and Culture, 入門 (Nyuumon) A1 かつどう (Katsudou)

Beginner-A: Mon & Wed, April 13 – May 11
6–8 PM | Instructor: Shio

Beginner-B: Tues. & Fri., April 14 – May 12
6–8 PM | Instructor: Kakutani

Beginner-C: Mon & Wed., April 13 – May 11
12–2 PM | Instructor: Shio


Advanced Beginner Conversation: For students who have finished Level 3 or 4 of our Japanese Courses, or equivalent. The course will focus on skills needed to survive in Japan. Frequently used expressions will be practiced in context.

Advanced Beginner-A: Tues. & Thurs., April 14 – May 12
6–8 PM | Instructor: Kurahara

Advanced Beginner-B: Mon & Wed., April 13 – May 11
12–2 PM | Instructor: Kitaura


Intermediate Conversation: For students who have finished Level 5, 6 or 7 of our Japanese Courses, or equivalent. The course will focus on strengthening speaking skills by having students engage in various exercises.

Intermediate-A: Tues. & Thurs., April 14 – May 12

Intermediate-B: Tues. & Thurs.,April 14 – May 12
12–2 PM | Instructor: Nakazawa


Advanced Intermediate Conversation: For students who have finished Level 8, 9, or 10 of our Japanese Courses, or equivalent. The course will emphasize role-playing by the students in different social and business situations. The focus will be on maintaining a conversation and learning and using situational vocabulary.
No textbook required.

Advanced Intermediate-A: Mon. & Wed., April 13 – May 11

Advanced Intermediate-B: Tues & Thurs., April 14 – May 12
12–2 PM | Instructor: Kurahara


Advanced Conversation: For students who are at Level 11 of our Japanese Courses or higher. Students will study and discuss various Japanese cultural topics. New vocabulary and expressions will be introduced.
No textbook required.

Textbooks

Updated 4/6/2020: Purchasing a hard copy/printed textbook is recommended, but not required. It will be very useful to have a copy in front of you for easy reference. Until further notice, textbooks are not available for purchase at the Language Center. If you wish to purchase a book, please look for an online vendor.

Digital versions of the textbooks are now available for free online viewing from the publisher until the end of June 2020 (see links below).

Tuition is non-refundable and non-transferable (including for credit) for any reason after 12 PM, the business day before your class starts. All refunds, including those by the deadline date, are subject to a $20 service charge. No partial registration or auditing is permitted. Please note that cancellations are accepted by phone only. Cancellations via e-mail are not accepted.
