2020-2021 WINTER CONVERSATIONAL JAPANESE

2020 Winter Conversational Japanese

These courses will be conducted online via Zoom. To participate fully, you will need access to a device with internet, microphone, and camera (such as a laptop, smartphone, or tablet).  Further instructions will be emailed to you the business day before your class begins. Please note that all times listed are New York time (ET/UTC-04:00).

Non-members: $320

At the moment, registration is only accepted through online (recommended) or by phone, and we are only taking payment in the form of credit or debit cards (no checks or cash). We highly recommend that you register online. Acceptance will be acknowledged by email.

New students with no previous background in Japanese should enroll in a Level 1 course (see Winter Japanese Level 1). Students with some background should refer to the Level Guide or course textbooks to determine the most appropriate class. There is no placement exam. If you are still not sure of your level, it may be possible to schedule a level assessment by phone with the Director. Please email language@japansociety.org to schedule.

Registrants will receive course information by email from language_inquiries@japansociety.org or language@japansociety.org on:
  • the afternoon of Friday, December 4, 2020 (for Monday & Wednesday classes)
  • the afternoon of Monday, December 7, 2020 (for Tuesday & Thursday classes)

Course Information

The curriculum is conversation-intensive, with the aim of strengthening the student’s ability to communicate effectively in social situations. The course materials will emphasize vocabulary and grammar that are useful in everyday activities. Each class meets twice a week online via Zoom for a total of 18 hours of instruction.

Beginner Conversation: For students who have finished Level 1 or 2 of our Japanese Courses, or equivalent. For students with some background in Japanese. Some social/situational survival skills will also be introduced.

Advanced Beginner Conversation: For students who have finished Level 3 or 4 of our Japanese Courses, or equivalent. The course will focus on skills needed to survive in Japan. Frequently used expressions will be practiced in context.

Intermediate Conversation: For students who have finished Level 5, 6 or 7 of our Japanese Courses, or equivalent. The course will focus on strengthening speaking skills by having students engage in various exercises.

Advanced Intermediate Conversation: For students who have finished Level 8, 9, or 10 of our Japanese Courses, or equivalent. The course will emphasize role-playing by the students in different social and business situations. The focus will be on maintaining a conversation and learning and using situational vocabulary.
No textbook required.

Advanced Conversation: For students who are at Level 11 of our Japanese Courses or higher. Students will study and discuss various Japanese cultural topics. New vocabulary and expressions will be introduced.
No textbook required.

Until further notice, textbooks are not available for purchase at the Language Center. Please purchase your book in advance from an outside vendor. Either a digital or print textbook is fine.

Tuition is non-refundable and non-transferable (including for credit) for any reason after 12 PM, the business day before your class starts. All refunds, including those by the deadline date, are subject to a $20 service charge. No partial registration or auditing is permitted. Please note that cancellations are accepted by phone only. Cancellations via e-mail are not accepted.

Japan Society reserves the right to cancel any course if sufficient enrollment is not obtained. In such a case, students already enrolled will receive full refunds.

By registering for a course, I accept and agree to the above terms of the cancellation policy. I also verify that the student taking this class is age 16 or older.
