Passing the Torch

September 2019—August 2020

From July 24 to August 9, 2020, the spotlight will shine on Tokyo, host to the world’s Summer Games. In celebration of this monumental event, Japan Society proudly presents a year-long, institution-wide program entitled Passing the Torch.

This past fall, the series examined the history and modern evolution of Japan's capital city through our exhibition Made in Tokyo: Architecture and Living, 1964/2020, using the two seminal years as contrast points. We also commemorated the 126th emperor's ascension and new Reiwa era with a slate of momentous performances, workshops and lectures honoring Tokyo's rich legacies.

Passing the Torch will continue to explore a broad range of related sports, technology, culture and eco-fashion topics—plus, a slate of fun, interactive family and educational programs. All roads will lead to our viewing extravaganza next summer, the details of which are still under wraps. We hope you join us during this exciting marathon year!
