Tea Time at Japan Society

A Conversation with Takeshi Kamiya

Americans and Japanese not only share our love for baseball, but are also exchanging ideas on baseball stadiums. When Texas Rangers asked HKS, a global architectural design firm that built their Globe Life Field, to help the Japanese professional baseball team Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, Takeshi Kamiya, HKS Principal and Director of Urban Design, was excited. The Fighters has a vision to be a game changer of Japanese sports business and build a new stadium by 2023, the 20th-year anniversary of their move to Sapporo. Having studied the “entertainment-oriented” model of American ballparks, the Fighters “did not just want to build a stadium, but a whole new city,” and “an entertainment-oriented city”, according to Kamiya. Kamiya gives a preview of this crowd-wowing new stadium, which will offer uniquely Japanese experiences unlike any other stadiums in the world. In addition to sports, HKS helps bridge U.S. and Japanese cultures in the healthcare and hospitality sectors, where Kamiya finds knowledge and experiences that both sides can offer each other.
