Past Event Highlight: Private Tour of Japanese Kogei | Future Forward

Led by Ron Lobacco, Marcia Docter Senior Curator of the Museum of Arts and Design, our Circle of Friends members took part in an exclusive tour of the Japanese Kōgei | Future Forward exhibition. Kōgei, a genre of traditional art that may be roughly translated as "artisan crafts," is a means of highly skilled artistic expression associated with specific regions in Japan. During the tour, our Circle of Friends learned about the challenges that Kōgei artisans faced in trying to preserve their art form. On one hand, most Kōgei artists see their role as one that upholds Japanese culture, but on the other hand, these artists needed to transcend conventions in order to revitalize their crafts and make their arts relatable today. Artists featured in the exhibition draw inspiration from current trends in Japan; Masayasu Mitsuke incorporates geometric shapes found in Islamic arts into his own style of Kutani-ware porcelain and Yuki Hayama fuses imagery found in Japanese comics with imagery from Chinese mythology in his bowl designs. We thank our patrons who participated in this event, and hope to see you at our next outing!
