Credit rating agencies play an important role in the financial markets by providing a long-term, globally consistent view of creditworthiness based on fundamental analysis. They have made headlines in recent years with European rating changes and the global financial crisis. Douglas Peterson, who became President of Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services in September 2011, addresses the challenges and opportunities ratings agencies face and his personal experiences in transitioning from banking to the ratings industry. Before joining S&P, Peterson was Chief Operating Officer of Citibank N.A. and spent six years as Chief Executive Officer of Citigroup Japan.
