Japan Society had the chance to sit down and talk with Haruka Kojin, one of the 16 artists in the upcoming gallery exhibition "Bye Bye Kitty!!!" Born in Hiroshima in 1983, Haruka Kōjin is one of the youngest artists featured in Bye Bye Kitty!!! Over the past few years she has been part of exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, Museu de Arte Moderna in Sao Paulo, the Soka Art Center in Taipei, and the Singapore Art Museum. In her series of works entitled reflectwo (2006–11), Kōjin uses brightly colored plasticized fabric flowers to create a sense of disorientation by the use of mirror effects. The installation you will see at Japan Society is based on an experience she had when walking by a river late at night. The reflection of trees and bushes on the still surface of the water transmuted into the disconcerting, disorienting image of a tower floating in the air. "The appearance of this floating organism gave me a strange sensation of gravity, as though I was lost in space, without any landmark. The fear of the unknown made me feel sick. It was a living thing totally paralyzed in the air. . . . Its form seemed to be alive in its perfection but its outline at that moment, even in an incomplete state, was strong enough to give me the false impression that it would continue to be like that forever. It had a beauty which looked as though I could touch it. Then suddenly I realized that everything was a dream."
