Japan’s New Political Landscape

The election of the Diet’s Lower House on December 16 brought a landslide victory and return to power for the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). With Shinzo Abe set to assume the role of Prime Minister, the Japanese political landscape is set to shift course, bringing into question Japan’s economic policies and its relations with its neighbors. Professor Gerald Curtis, Burgess Professor of Political Science, Columbia University, discusses the election results, the key players in the new government, their priorities, the key domestic and foreign policy issues they will have to grapple with, and prospects for Japan's relations with China and the U.S.
