Uki Uki NihonGO! Lesson #11 Small Talk Part 2

Welcome to Uki Uki NihonGO + Culture!

Today we’ll introduce some of the most common 10-second small talk phrases you can use in various places. Today’s focus is a small talk in polite speech. You can use this when you run into someone you are not that close to, e.g. an acquaintance, neighbor or a co-worker.

Let’s say you ran into your neighbor Sumisu-san at a local grocery store. The conversation usually goes like this.

A, Sumisu-san. Konnichiwa. (Oh hello, Ms. Smith.)
Doumo konnichiwa. (Hello.)
Ii tenki desune. (It’s nice weather, isn’t it?)
Sou desune. (Yes, it is.)
Dewa, mata. (OK, take care.)
Doumo. (See you.)

Here are some variations on the weather.

Hidoi ame desune. (It’s raining badly, isn’t it?)
Atsui desune. (It’s so hot, isn’t it?)
Samui desune. (It’s freezing, isn’t it?)
Atatakai desune. (It’s nice & warm, isn’t it?)
Suzushii desune. (It’s breezy, isn’t it?)

Next time you ran into an acquaintance or co-worker, please try out these quick phrases!
