Have you always wanted to learn Japanese, but were unsure where to start? Come for a Japanese Trial Lesson for Beginners, taught by the Language Center’s Director, Tomoyo Kamimura. These Japanese Trial Lessons are scheduled throughout the year prior to the start of Japanese Level 1 courses.

Each lesson covers the same material and is structured for complete beginners of Japanese. If you are not a complete beginner, please take a look at the Language Center homepage (see the Japanese Level Guide and the Language Center Schedule) for information about our courses. You may also email [email protected] with your questions.

Although it is not required to show your face or video online, we highly recommend having your video on if possible. Seeing each other’s facial expressions is a part of conversation and language learning. We also ask that every participant be able to participate via their microphone. If you do not have one of these capabilities or would like to discuss accommodations, please contact us at [email protected].

Ms. Tomoyo Kamimura holds a BA from Waseda University, an MA in Linguistics from the University of Oregon and an MBA from Columbia University. She has been teaching Japanese at universities both in the US and Japan for over 15 years. Ms. Kamimura has numerous publications and has served as co-editor of Ohbunsha’s Japanese – English Dictionary. Previously, she created The New School’s undergraduate Japanese program and became its coordinator.

Japan Society programs are made possible by leadership support from Shiseido Americas and The Ford Foundation. Support for Japan Society’s Language Center is provided, in part, by Mark F. Goldfield and Mary E. Hatch; Christopher Hong; Steven Giordano; Juan Ruiz Gomez; The Japan Foundation, Los Angeles; and Dr. Bic Kanayjorn.
