Welcome! ようこそ!

Japan Society’s Language Center offers a variety of courses, workshops and intensives throughout the year in Japanese language and shodo (Japanese calligraphy), among other select courses. Founded in 1972, we are the premiere Japanese language center in New York City. We hope you will study with us!

Open Courses

Winter Japanese (Level 1)
The course is designed to introduce elementary Japanese to students with no previous background in the language. Basic vocabulary, grammar and sentence structures will be taught in romaji (Japanese written phonetically in the Roman alphabet) so students can carry on a simple conversation. Hiragana and some introductory kanji will be introduced.

Winter Conversational Japanese
The curriculum is conversation-intensive, with the aim of strengthening the student’s ability to communicate effectively in social situations. The course materials will emphasize vocabulary and grammar that are useful in everyday activities.

Winter Shodo
In this open level workshop, beginners will learn the brush strokes used in basic kanji, and more advanced students will have the opportunity to hone their skills. Students at any level from beginner to advanced are welcome to register.

Business Etiquette
Learn basic Japanese phrases and behavioral skills needed in Japanese corporate environments, including practical expressions, business card exchange, proper bowing and more.

Spring Japanese
Thirteen levels of Japanese are offered this spring, from beginner to advanced, emphasizing conversation, listening, reading and writing. Four Kanji courses and other specialized courses, such as J-Drama and Anime, are also offered.

Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji Workshops
These mini-workshops will help beginning students master the two Japanese syllabaries, hiragana and katakana. A Kanji workshop will also be offered this spring to introduce the fundamental concepts of the kanji structure, bushu (radicals), on & kun readings and more.

Teacher Training Program: Intermediate
An intensive training session for native or fluent speakers of Japanese, this course is a follow-up for those who have either taken the introductory teacher training course or have had some experience teaching Japanese. This course focuses on how to teach advanced-beginner to intermediate-level Japanese.

Spring English
Thirty-eight hours of beginner and intermediate/advanced English as a Second Language (ESL) conversation. 38時間にわたる初級及び中/上級英語学習者を対象にした日本人向け英会話教室。

Spring Shodo
These hands-on workshops will introduce the techniques of Shodō, an art form using a brush and charcoal ink on paper, wood plaques, and fabric. Students at any level from beginner to advanced are welcome to register and Japanese language skills are not required.
